Interactive Art 7: Epicenter

EPICENTER from SILA SVETA on Vimeo.

Epicenter was created by Russians, TUNDRA and Sila Sveta to celebrate 7th Anniversary of ARMA17 in Moscow. Each group created an installation that places the viewer in the “epicenter of borderless creativity." "The viewer enters into a totally immersive and unfamiliar dark space. He trues to understand what is waiting for him, but the picture of the world is changing with light and sound. Confronted with an unfamiliar, fast-paced changing scene, the viewer is made to feel small and insignificant in face of the scale of what is happening in front of him. It is as though he is an unwanted witness of an unknown lighting phenomena, placing him right in the Epicenter of an uncontrollable massive activity.

Personally I find this work rather interesting as it deals with simple changes in lights and sounds to build an unfamiliar space. Watching the video makes you feel as though you are in the middle of a massive storm you cannot control. One feels insignificant and powerless in front of the scene of lights and sounds that change so rapidly that it is as though one is being thrown about by the winds of a thunderstorm. Being in the center of all this activity truly feels like you are catching sight of an unknown phenomenon that is a prologue to something greater. Perhaps it has to do with the scale of the art piece that makes one feel so insignificant, although it is also important to note that a similar effect would probably be possible with just 4 pillars of light in an infinity mirror room.
