Interactive Art 8: Antrum

Antrum by Mathrioshka from CENTER MARS on Vimeo.

Created by artist Mathrioshka, the installation is made to look like a grotto of the membrane. The surface is inhabited by strange creatures made out of lights representing pure mathematical abstractions mixed with natural shapes. Its complex structure causes association with living creatures, space objects and architectural constructions. Viewers can push the membrane and try to make contact with them.

There is always this fascination with interacting with an object given "life" by a human being. We love to see it interact with us, react to us and attempt to form a sort of communication with the object. This art piece brings about the question of "where is the boundary of life" when it comes to animating and stimulating objects that can react to us. It is interesting to see how an object reacts to different interactions we do to stimulate it and amazing to see an illusion of life in what we imagine to be a strange creature. The idea of being able to find a living space of these creatures and interact with them, as though finding a nest of friendly creatures, by letting our imagination decide what these creatures are and our relationship to them, is rather interesting to me as it makes me realise that there is no need for the artist to paint a full picture for an interactive piece to work. Most of the time it is simply enough to stimulate the viewer's imagination.
